"JALANAN (“Streetside”) is a feature-length musical documentary that tells the captivating story of Boni, Ho and Titi - three gifted, charismatic bus musicians in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The documentary intimately portrays the young musicians’ lives and distinctive cheeky sub-culture, while also painting a striking portrait of Indonesia’s frantic capital city that is at once raw, humorous and brutally honest.

JALANAN accompanies the three characters as they perform songs of social angst on commuter buses, debate politics and crime by the roadside and flee their sewage underpass home during a monsoon flash flood. It follows them back to their distant home villages in East Java and exposes the injustices and dangers they face in their adopted city.

Above all, JALANAN is the story of marginalized youngsters struggling to lead meaningful, independent lives in a huge, oppressive city that is being overrun by the effects of globalization. A powerful, real-life soundtrack of the musicians’ original compositions accompanies the film throughout."
